Culled from hundreds of beats that were made in compulsory practice (with the goal of creating at least one thing a day) between the years of 2014-2017, Vol.1 is Hevln’s first in a series of instrumental releases. Through an obsession with different regional club musics, Gorham found his way down the rabbit-hole of “jitting”, a regional dance native to Detroit, which could be considered a close cousin to the frenetic Chicago dance known as “footwork” — DJs at jit battles speed up the tempos of songs to dizzying heights for dancers. Hevln applied that same technique to selections from the deep well of material that he created from 2014-2017. What resulted from this was a collection of minimal but bass heavy Baltimore-, Jersey-, and UK-club style beats. As a live performer, the beats are the backdrop for Gorham’s unique guitar approach and serve to contrast with his role as a singer-songwriter. As Hevln, Gorham will be releasing Vol. 1 Adventurous Club with San Francisco-based label Text Me Records and Los Angeles-based label Gnar Tapes.
